Handmade Knife

My name is Keld Lisby Hansen, and I am a knife maker.

My passion is to create handmade utility knives where functionality, fine craftsmanship, and the natural beauty of the materials go hand in hand. I grind the damascus blades myself, shape the handles, and sew the leather sheaths by hand – all with care and deep respect for traditional craftsmanship.

I work with carefully selected materials such as mammoth ivory, reindeer antler, moose horn, exotic and Nordic woods, stabilized wood, as well as silver, bronze, and nickel silver. Every material is chosen thoughtfully to ensure that each knife is not only beautiful and durable, but also comfortable to use.

My knives are made to be used – they should feel right in the hand, be well-balanced, and last for many years. I place great emphasis on letting the natural character of the materials come through in the finished piece.

In the gallery on my website, you can see a selection of the knives I’ve made. You are very welcome to leave a comment or share your thoughts.

Thank you for taking the time to view my work.

Kind regards,
Keld Lisby Hansen

Knife Maker Keld Lisby Hansen

About me...

My name is Keld Lisby Hansen, and I am a knifemaker.

I live on a former farm about 10 km east of Viborg in Central Jutland, Denmark, where I have established my workshop.

My journey as a knifemaker began back in the 1990s when, as a young scout, I needed a knife. I decided to make one myself, and that became the start of a passion that quickly grew stronger. After making one knife, I made another – and then another. Each knife was a new challenge, and my fascination with both the craftsmanship and the materials I worked with grew steadily.

In the beginning, I was self-taught and read everything I could find at the library. I experimented, tried things out, and learned from my own mistakes and successes. Later, I chose to participate in courses where I had the opportunity to learn from some of the best knifemakers. I’ve also had the honour of holding courses myself, where I could share my knowledge and passion with others.

I make all parts of my knives myself. In the early years, I forged my own blades the traditional way – with an anvil and forge. I found great value in using these old methods, which gave me a deep understanding of both the materials and the craft. Today, I have modernized my tools and primarily work with a homemade belt grinder to shape the blades. Despite the technological development in my workshop, I remain committed to the traditional values that define knifemaking as an art form.

I never make two knives that are alike. Each knife is unique and created with care, precision, and a desire to produce a functional tool that is also beautiful to look at. I make everything – from the damascus blades to the custom-designed handles and leather sheaths. I only use the best materials, carefully selected for their aesthetic qualities and durability. These include mammoth tooth, reindeer antler, moose horn, exotic and Nordic woods, stabilized wood, and precious metals like silver, bronze, and nickel silver.

My focus is to create knives that are practical and durable. They should feel good in the hand, be well-balanced, and ready for use. I want my knives to meet practical needs while also retaining an aesthetic quality that makes them unique and personal.

In 2017, I was featured as a knifemaker in the 3rd edition of Knivbladet, which was a great recognition of my work and a confirmation that my passion and dedication to the craft are appreciated in the knifemaking community.

I see knifemaking as a lifelong journey, where every knife brings new learning, and where the constant development of both technique and material understanding makes the work both challenging and deeply rewarding.
